A surprising visitorA rare and beautifl fish observed during an offshore Antares operationCastor- boat is a cable boat belonging to the Foselev Company operating off the Provence coast, in the Mediterrean sea. In 2005, while she was working off Nice, the crew observed a strange fish swimming around the boat. After investigations, Bernard Peronnet, the skipper, learned that it was an Oarfish (Regalec in French, also 'King of Herrings'), known to specialists only from dead or sick specimens infrequently found around the coast but almost never observed in good health. One or two weeks later, the same boat was working for the ANTARES deep sea neutrino telescope, above the ANTARES site near Toulon (6 deg 10' East, 42 deg 50' North, 2500 m depth) with several members of the experiment on board. Again, a(the) Regalec was observed swimming around the boat. Was it the same individual? The size, at least, was about the same: 1m long, while specimens of more than 8 m are quoted in the literature. |
Un visiteur surprenantUn poisson rare et magnifique observé lors d'une opération sur le site AntaresLe "Castor 2" est un cablier appartenant à la compagnie Fosselev opérant au large des côtes provençales, en mer Méditerranée,. En 2005, lors d'une opération au large de Nice, l'équipage observa un étrange poisson nageant à proximité du bateau. Après enquête, Bernard Peronnet, le skipper, appris qu'il s'agisait d'un Régalec, connu des spécialistes au travers de spécimens malades ou morts trouvés à proximité de la côte, mais très rarement vus en bonne santé. Une ou deux semaines plus tard, le même navire était en opération sur le site du télescope Antares près de Toulon (6deg 10' Est, 42deg 50' Nord, 2500m de profondeur) avec plusieurs membres de l'expérience à bord. De nouveau un régalec fut observé nageant près du navire. S'agissait-il du même individu? La taille, tout au moins, était similaire : une longueur d'un mètre alors que des spécimens jusqu'à 8 m sont cités dans la littérature. |

The boat was at a fixed position, recovering a deep sea cable. The oarfish
spent about two hours observing this cable, at 20cm depth and about one
meter from the stern, in the horizontal position. It was quite motionless,
with just some undulation of its dorsal fin. The colour of the body was
blue with black streaks. The oars and rays were red with orange tips. This fish (or a similar one?) was observed again a month later from the Castor-2 boat. To some of us, it seemed the fish was in love with the boat! Others observed that the deep sea cable frequently caught on jellyfish and dragged them to the surface. Was this an opportunity for the Oarfish to get this prey for free? But none of us could see the fish eating anything on the cable... (Text and picture from P. Vernin and G. Hallewell) |

Le bateau était stationnaire, utilisée à récupérer un câble grand fond. Le régalec passa environ deux heures à observer ce câble, à 20 cm sous l'eau et un mètre de la poupe, à l'horizontale. Il était relativement immobile, avec seulement l'ondulation de sa nageoire dorsale. Son coprs était bleu avec des stries noires. Les nageaoires étaient rouges avec des pointes oranges. Ce poisson (ou un poisson similaire) fut de nouveau observé un mois plus tard près du même bateau. Certains d'entre nous pensèrent que le poissons était tombé amoureux du bateau. D'autres observèrent que le câble grand fond remontait souvent des méduses: était-ce une occasion pour le régalec d'obtenir ses proies facilement ?
