A first look at the sky

Since 2007 ANTARES scrutinizes the sky in the search for neutrinos of a cosmic origin
that could witness the most violent phenomena in the Universe. At present,
more than one thousand neutrinos have been detected, enabling the first
view of the sky through this unique messenger.

The search for neutrinos started actually before  the
detector was completely installed, in 2008. This search is hindered by the
downgoing muons produced by the cosmic rays that, despite the shielding
provided by the 2 kilometres of water above, are still the dominant
radiation.

Depuis 2007 Antares scrute le ciel à la recherche de neutrinos
d’origine cosmique, témoins des phénomènes les plus violents de l’Univers.
Aujourd’hui plus de mille neutrinos ont été détectés, permettant d’obtenir
de ce messager unique les premières vues du ciel.

La recherche de neutrinos a débuté avant la fin de
l’installation du détecteur en 2008. Cette quête est rendue difficile par
les muons descendants produits par le rayonnement cosmique, une
contribution dominante malgré les 2 kilomètres d’eau surplombant le
détecteur.
This plot shows the number of muons detected in the telescope (black
curve), after some quality selection, as a function of the angle
of incidence -in degrees- in the detector (+90 means vertical,
downward going; -90 vertical upward going. Zero means horizontal).		 Cette figure présente le nombre de muons détectés dans le télescope
(courbe noire) après application de critères de qualité, en
fonction de l’angle d’incidence -en degrés- dans le détecteur (+90
degrés pour les descendants verticaux, -90 pour les montants
verticaux, 0 pour les horizontaux).
The flux measured is compared with what is
obtained from computer simulations of the downgoing muons (red
curve) and the atmospheric neutrinos (blue curve). The green area
represents the uncertainties on predictions.

 Le flux
mesuré est comparé avec ce qui est obtenu de simulations sur
ordinateur pour les muons descendants (en rouge) et les neutrinos
atmosphériques (en bleu). La bande verte représente les
incertitudes sur les prédictions.
The downward
going background is well isolated, allowing
the identification of the upgoing muons that cross the detector. These
upgoing muons have necessarily been produced by the only known particle
able to cross the whole Earth: the neutrino.		 Le bruit de fond descendant est bien isolé,
permettant l’identification des muons montants qui traversent le
détecteur. Ces muons ont nécessairement été produits par la
seule particule capable de traverser la Terre entière : le
neutrino.
This plot -similar to the previous one- shows
in detail the angular distribution of muons coming from below the detector. As can be seen, the flux measured is in
good agreement with the expectations.


This proves the ability
of Antares to extract muons induced by neutrinos from the dominant
downward going muons generated above the detector. This allows the
search for cosmic neutrino sources

 Cette figure -similaire à la précédente-
présente en détail la distribution angulaire des muons venant de sous le
détecteur. Le flux mesuré est en bon accord avec les prédictions,
démontrant ainsi la capacité d’Antares à extraire les muons induits par
les neutrinos du flux dominant de muons produits au-dessus du détecteur.
La recherche de source de neutrinos cosmiques peut commencer.
Most of the observed
neutrinos are created in the atmosphere of the antipodes coming from all
directions under the detector. They are named atmospheric neutrinos
for this reason. ANTARES has accumulated up to now more than
one thousand of these events. Any cluster of neutrinos from a
particular region of the sky which cannot be attributed to the atmospheric
neutrinos therefore would be a signature of an extraterrestrial source.
Ces neutrinos sont tout d’abord ceux qui ont été
créés dans l’atmosphère aux antipodes du détecteur, par le rayonnement
cosmique. Appelés pour cette raison « neutrinos atmosphériques », ils
proviennent de toutes les directions sous le détecteur. Antares a
aujourd’hui accumulé plus d’un millier de ces événements. La recherche de
sources de neutrinos cosmiques peut donc commencer : en effet sur la
carte, elles se traduiront par une accumulation très localisée,
anormalement élevée, qui ne peut être attribuée aux neutrinos
atmosphériques.
First  sky view with the data taken by the ANTARES
telescope.
The grey background is correlated to the field of view of the detector : the darker the region, the
lower the visibility; the white region is always
observable. The centre of the map corresponds to the Galactic Centre.

Events in this map have been scrambled.

 
Première vue du ciel d’après les données prises en
2007 et en 2008, avec un nombre croissant de lignes
permettant d’observer de un à environ 3 neutrinos par
jour. Le fond en dégradé de gris représente le champ de
vue du détecteur (clair, vue maximale sous le
détecteur ; sombre, partie non visible au-dessus). Le
centre de la carte correspond au centre galactique.
